Consciousness

You live in a dream world, darling and I love that about you.
But, me?
I live in the nightmare realm and I know how things really happen.
I understand the shadows;
The darkness that lurks around your every corner.
I see what you cannot;
I know what you do not;
And I eat the things that you shall never have to taste.
So, bid me goodnight and be on your way.
This isn't the place for you to linger.
You will get swallowed up here,
And I will not allow that on my watch;
Will not have that on my conscience;
Cannot have that burden hanging on me through the days ahead and the nights below.
So, go.
Go quietly.
And live bravely in your ignorance.
I got this.

Senseless

I cannot forget their faces -
distorted
glassy
haunting.

I cannot silence their words -
evil
ignorant
taunting.

I cannot extinguish their smell -
strong
bitter
rotting.

I cannot forget their movements -
jumpy
crooked
crawling.

But I can taste this slumber that never comes -
sweet
silent
yawning.

Same Sentiment; Different Day

Always Choose the Light.

I love this quote.
And it is a very nice coincidence that I stumbled upon it today as I was just texting a loved one this morning about her patience and support of me, especially in our youth.

This quote resonates well with me and makes me appreciate her and all of the people in my life who are filled with such light.  I would like to thank them for their help through all those times when I've been incapable of sleep and unsure of the shadows that haunt me.
You know who you are...thank you for being my night light.

One of my Faves

Paid In Full

Thank you for my ears
that can hear a bird's song -
the breeze through the trees -
the voices in my head.

Thank you for my eyes
that can see a sunlit morn -
the full moon in its sky -
the shadows in the corners of my room.

Thank you for my slumber
the comfort of my bed -
the softness of my pillow -
the nightmares that call me home.

Thank you for my ghosts
the ones that haunt my days -
the others that visit my nights -
the ones that summon me into the darkness
that choke me without reason
that slash me without razors
that own me without title.

Thank you that their will be done.
And, that now, my payment is none.

Only a Dream?

Remember when you were little,
Just bite size?
Can you remember lying in your bed at night, restless and imaginative?
Hoping that sleep would come for you before the Boogeyman?

Can you remember the shadows?
Maybe they were hanging from the light?
Creeping through the hallway?
Hiding in the closet?

Do you remember the fear?
The tightness in your chest?
Trying to catch your breath before they caught you?
Squeezing your eyes shut to block out the darkness?

Did you panic?
Pray?
Piss yourself?

Since then, have you filed all that nonsense away?
Flooded those thoughts with worry and work?
Did you replace that imagination with responsibility?
Did you swap that magic for money?
Those dreams for nightmares?

Who's crazy now?

Maybe it's you?
Maybe it's still me.

Book Club Business - November 2020

 "Riley thought a minute, then said, 'I've heard that sometimes objects act as conduits, you know? Like if you hold your grandmother's wedding ring, you might call her back enough to be able to smell her perfume.'

'I've always had this idea that objects hold history,' Helen said.

Riley nodded. 'But maybe it's more than that. Maybe they don't just hold it - maybe it flows through them, you know? Gives the dead a kind of ... touchstone; something to pull them back to this world."

Night Lights Book Club - October 2020

I recommend short story collections this time of year,
because if you're anything like me,
the more time you have to concentrate on Halloween the better.
For me, short tales work the best as I get both a quick horror fix for the mind and
 a chance to partake in the real horrors of the season.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Paranormal Powers

Do you believe that there are certain people out there capable of foretelling the future?
Of communicating with spirits?
Of moving objects or healing others with their mind?
Do you believe in psychic readings? Psychic abilities? Spirit guides?
Where do you stand on seers and oracles and prophets?

There have been an endless number of cases reported throughout history of bizarre happenings; outrageous predictions; severe accusations; extraordinary people.
Some have been respected and others discarded.
Why?
Were they charlatans? Scam artists? Tricksters?
Or are these people legit? Renowned? Trusted?
Have you read Nostradamus?
Would you have wanted to meet Cayce?
Is there something in your life that has made you a believer? A cynic?

Tell me your thoughts on telepathy.
Let's talk about the differences between psychics and mediums.
Have you ever been to one?
Do you dabble in the occasional palm reading?
Do you, yourself, possess this gift?
Is this paranormal power vested through people and predictions verity or bullshit?
Comment below and let me know.

Listen To The Voices

I'm so use to drowning my demons to quiet them.
That I couldn't hear their pleas;
Their warnings;
Their advice.

Maybe that's why they kept coming back.
Not to drag me asunder;
Not to play havoc on my soul.
But to warn me;
Protect me;
To keep me safe after all.

For that is what happened
The night I stumbled and fell.
They raised my soul;
Fixed my flesh;
And licked the blood from my wounds.

So, now I listen.
I listen to those voices.
I hear what they say.
I pay close attention.
This is how I survive now.

This is how I shine.

๐Ÿ’—For the Birthday Girl

I wrote this for my sister.
She was always such a fan of my writing, and although she didn't understand the darkness behind it, she fully supported me and encouraged me to continue with this gift.
Thank you, Kim.
Thank you for the love.
I pushed the darkness aside for a moment.

This one's for you....

Angel of the Skies

I know you've got your angel wings
And you're flying around doing angel things
Ushering in everything the day brings...

But I miss you.

I know you're up there in that night sky,
With your twinkle and your sparkle and a watchful eye
Pulling the shade down and raising that moon up high...

But I miss you.

And I know you're all around me, I can smell you upon the breeze;
 I know you still speak to me, because I hear you whisper through the trees;
And I can feel your love raging up a storm and like the rain, it puts me at ease...

But I miss you.

Waiting

I have a good vibe but a dark heart.

They are at constant war.
Each trying to suck the soul out of the other.
Each one struggling to own the other.
One trying to snuff out the light.
The other trying to strangle the shadow.

Truth be told, I love them both.
I love them both equally.

So, it makes me wonder
which one will win?
And which one will be blown
asunder?

Such a raw song.
There's nothing too creepy about it, Creepsters but I had to share it because of that voice.
Plus, I would like to here more about this Lady May.
She sounds timeless.
With a name like that, I believe she would make a good Gothic tale.

Night Lights Book Club - September 2020

is one of those books you will devour in days, or hours, if you allow yourself.
This story is horrifying, heartwarming and incredible.
McCarthy has a way with words, dialogue and imagery -
Subtle yet profound;
Beautiful yet tragic.
It is one hell of a nightmare.

You Always Remember Your First

Nightmare # 1:
    I was falling, and for a brief moment flying ~ flying down and down and down towards the light.  The wind picked up behind me and pushed me further, forcing me to lose control and lashing me around at unimaginable speeds.  The air raged against me; my head ached from the pressure and I felt disconnected from it.  I could only compare the fall to the acclaimed Road Runner series, where Wile E. Coyote would topple over a cliff, plunging to his death.  Even the rocky landscape from that cartoon surrounded me; different shades and shapes of rock and rubble encased me, filling my peripheral vision with its distortion.
     Faster and faster I fell.  Faster and faster I plummeted ~ not knowing what awaited me at the bottom, but assuring myself it was not good.  And as if to answer me, a horrendous laugh echoed from the pit below.  And then, came the heat.  In an instance, I was gasping for breath; wiping the sweat that ran into my eyes; and coughing soot from my throat.  I was being thrown to and fro, now heading face first ~ and even through my watering eyes I could see the fire and how quickly I was heading towards it.  But more disturbing than that was the creature that stood among the flames.  I'm sure it was the devil ~ again, in cartoon form ~ with a curved red tail that came to an arrowed point and leathery red skin that glowed like embers in the fire.
     His face, however, was far from animated.  It was charcoal-burnt and still melting, with an oozing eye that was beginning to droop from its socket.  From a hollow hole ~ masquerading as his mouth ~ four tiny snakes wiggled about, their tongues hissing and lapping up the melting skin around his features; and from it erupted another horrific laugh causing my ears to pop and bleed from its boisterous bellow.  He raised one arm above his head and erected a pitchfork, anticipating my landing and all too ready to hook my body and hold me over the flames to toast me to my death ~ like a marshmallow at summer camp.  I pressed frantically with my hands, assuming they would emulate brakes and slow my speed, but to no avail.  I was dangerously close now, my skin beginning to bubble and blister from the heat.  I opened my mouth to scream ~ but how ironic ~ no sound would follow through my voice box.  I could feel my ears were overheating and soon they would burst into flames along with the rest of my body.  Perhaps falling onto that pitchfork would be more humane than going out by fire.
     Perhaps.
     I squeezed my eyes shut and braced myself for impact.

~~~ I awoke with a jolt.
I was sitting up in bed, sweat pouring from my forehead and down my back.
I was ~ maybe ~ ten years old and safe in my parent's house.
All safe for now.
Hush
Nightmare #52:
by: DeeVious
What used to soothe her now became an unbearable current of pain to her ears – the crickets stirring up their racket; that dog yapping in a distant yard; even those bullfrogs by the pond would not stop talking, not for a second.
The day was slipping away and still those birds flew back and forth, back and forth, back and forth – their incessant chirping echoing like a grocery store check-out scanner.
All the sweet sounds of summer that used to comfort her now infuriated her.
It was because he was gone.
And what joy was there in anything now?
Krista wiped her eyes and stared-down two rabbits playing on the lawn.  Their stupid game of cat and mouse annoyed her, and she was sure if she had to watch them for another minute, she’d go mad.
Or was she already mad?
Crazy, yes.  But also angry.  Angry that he left her here all alone.  That he had lied to her, promising that he’d always look out for her.  Angry at herself for loving someone so much.
Maybe she was just numb?
Dazed?
Had been ever since he passed on.  Ever since that gunman snuffed out his breath.  That's who she was mad at.  That's who should be suffering.  Not her.
She needed to go back inside.  She shouldn’t have come out here to begin with - not yet.
It wasn’t safe.
She wasn’t ready - no matter what the therapist told her.
She ran to the door, slammed it shut and locked herself in.
Still, the buzzing in her ears wouldn’t let up, not even in the quiet of the house.  She cried from the pain that resonated in her head; the ache that jutted to the back of her neck; she choked on the sadness of her heart; and she prayed for it all to stop ~ begged the God she was so angry at to make it all stop. But the ringing would not let up, just kept on like a finger stuck to a doorbell.
It was all up to her.
She had to silence it.
With an eerie calm, she searched her pocket for the razor.
A tear of relief trickled down her face as her fingertips felt the cold metal shaver.
She pulled out the shiny object, stared at it and promised herself this would be the last time.
Krista started in the crease of her arm.
With each cut, the ringing in her ears got slightly softer; the tightness in her chest let loose.
She sawed and sawed at her skin - each cut deeper than the last - until she fell onto the tiled floor, like a drunk, broken after a three-day bender.  The silence was golden.  She sighed with contentment and sucked on one of her gashes - the taste of blood made her woozy.
“I miss you, Eric,” she whispered and licked another wound.
